What Divemaster training involves
You revisit dive theory in more depth, practise managing stress and problem scenarios, learn to supervise skill demonstrations for students, and build up dive planning and mapping skills. By the end, you are qualified to lead certified divers and assist an instructor running a course.
It is a genuine shift in responsibility from every course before it. Where Rescue Diver taught you to manage a single problem, Divemaster asks you to think about the safety and experience of an entire group at once, which takes real practice to get comfortable with.
You also sit a series of PADI theory exams covering physics, physiology, equipment, dive skills and the recreational dive planner, which get reviewed properly rather than treated as a formality before you move on to the practical side.
Getting from 40 to 60 dives
PADI requires 40 logged dives to start Divemaster training and 60 to certify. Most of that gap closes naturally over the 4 weeks as you dive with fun divers, help with courses, and complete your own training dives, including mapping and navigating local sites.
By the time you reach 60 dives, you will likely know several local sites well enough to brief a group on them yourself, which is a large part of what the certification actually tests.
If you are arriving with dives closer to the 40 minimum than the 60 needed to certify, it is worth building in a little extra time before you start, since rushing the back half of the internship to hit the dive count is never the goal.
Workshops built into the internship
Beyond the standard PADI syllabus, our internship includes a compressor and equipment servicing workshop, our Manta Ray and Mola Mola Conservation course, Dive Against Debris, an introduction to underwater hockey, and a sidemount introduction.
These are not just add-ons for the sake of it. The equipment workshop in particular gives you a working understanding of how the gear you rely on every day is actually maintained, which is genuinely useful knowledge for a working dive professional.
Life as an intern at Sober
Expect time in our 25 x 15 m, 2.4 m pool assisting course students, boat crew duties, and diving with fun divers at our standard 1 guide to 4 divers ratio. It is hands-on from early in the internship, not just observation.
You will spend time on both sides of the counter, so to speak, helping run the boats and the pool sessions while also still being a student yourself, which is a realistic preview of what working at a dive centre actually looks like day to day.
Equipment during your internship
If you do not own a full set of gear, rental is 1,000,000 IDR per week. Our Scubapro equipment is serviced in-house by our own technical staff, so you are training on well-maintained kit throughout, and the compressor and equipment workshop gives you a look at exactly how that servicing works.
Many interns choose to buy at least a mask, fins and a regulator of their own partway through the 4 weeks, both for the fit and because it starts building the kit they will need if they go on to work professionally afterwards.
Who tends to do well as an intern
Divemaster suits people who are comfortable being corrected, since a large part of the role is taking feedback from instructors and applying it immediately, in front of students. It also rewards genuine patience with beginners, since you will spend real time working with Open Water and Discover Scuba Diving students who are just starting out.
After Divemaster
Sober Diving is working toward offering Instructor-level training on site. If you want to continue straight to Instructor after your internship, ask us for the latest on timing and options.
In the meantime, Divemaster itself opens up genuine work opportunities, at dive centres around the world that need staff who can lead groups and assist instructors, which is exactly what the certification is designed to prove you can do.
How it runs
Weeks 1-2
Theory review, skill demonstration practice, and the compressor and equipment workshop.
Weeks 3-4
Leading fun divers and assisting courses, conservation and sidemount workshops, and completing your dive count toward certification.
