PADI Rescue Diver Course in Nusa Lembongan

Rescue Diver is where the focus shifts from your own skills to watching out for everyone else in the water. Over a series of scenarios, in the pool and the ocean, you practise recognising problems early, managing a tired or panicked diver, and running a missing diver search.

What Rescue Diver changes

Every course up to this point has been about your own comfort and skill underwater. Rescue Diver turns that around: you learn to spot the early signs that a buddy is struggling, and what to actually do about it, rather than assuming someone else will handle it.

Divers who have done the course often describe it as the point where diving stopped feeling like a series of individual skills and started feeling like something they could actually be trusted with, both for themselves and for the people they dive with.

Prerequisites: Advanced plus EFR

You need a PADI Adventure Diver or Advanced Open Water Diver certification (or equivalent), and Emergency First Response Primary and Secondary Care completed within the last 24 months. If your EFR has lapsed, or you have never done it, book the combo package and we run it first.

It is worth checking both boxes before you arrive if you can, since starting Rescue Diver only to discover your EFR needs renewing partway through adds a day to a course that otherwise runs in a predictable block.

What you will practise

Expect scenarios covering self-rescue, towing a tired or panicked diver back to the boat, responding to a diver in distress underwater, and searching for a missing buddy using a proper search pattern. You also practise using emergency oxygen, which our boats already carry as standard equipment.

Each scenario is run more than once, first slowly with your instructor talking you through it, then at a more realistic pace once the steps are familiar. It is deliberately uncomfortable at times, since that is closer to what a real situation would feel like, but always within a controlled setting with your instructor watching closely.

Why it suits diving here

Current and drift conditions around Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Penida make good judgement genuinely useful, not just theoretical. Our boats carry oxygen, a first aid kit and a marine radio on every trip, so the equipment side of rescue training matches what you would actually reach for in a real situation.

Practising a missing diver search in a location where drift is a normal part of diving gives the skill more weight than doing the same exercise somewhere current is rarely a factor.

The classroom side

Before the practical scenarios, there is a knowledge development component covering stress recognition, how accidents typically unfold, and how to prevent problems before they become emergencies in the first place. It is a smaller part of the course than the water work, but it shapes how you approach every scenario that follows.

A good part of this is genuinely about prevention rather than reaction, spotting the small signs, someone breathing harder than usual, drifting slightly from the group, that tend to come before a real problem rather than during one.

How long it takes

Most candidates finish in 3 to 4 days, depending on how quickly scenarios go and how much time you have already spent diving. We would rather run an extra half day of practice than rush a skill you are not yet confident with, since the whole point of the course is that these skills need to hold up under real pressure.

Divers who arrive with more logged dives and stronger buoyancy control from the outset often move through the practical scenarios a little faster, simply because less of their attention is spent managing their own position in the water.

After Rescue Diver

Rescue Diver is a required certification before starting PADI Divemaster, Sober Diving's professional-level internship. It is also simply a better, more capable way to dive with a buddy, rescue trained or not, and many divers who have no interest in going professional still take it purely for the added confidence and competence it brings.

If Divemaster is the plan, it is worth logging as many dives as you can between finishing Rescue Diver and starting the internship, since the 40-dive minimum to begin training comes up sooner than most people expect.

How it runs

Questions

How long does the Rescue Diver course take?

Usually 3 to 4 days at Sober Diving, though this can vary with pace and prior experience.

Do I need Advanced Open Water before Rescue Diver?

You need PADI Adventure Diver or Advanced Open Water Diver (or equivalent), which most divers complete through our Advanced Open Water course.

What if I do not have an EFR certification yet?

Book the Rescue Diver plus Emergency First Response combo, which runs EFR first at a combined price of 8,300,000 IDR.

Is Rescue Diver harder than Advanced Open Water?

It is more demanding physically and mentally, since you are managing scenarios involving another diver rather than just your own skills, but it does not require greater depth or technical diving ability.

What is the minimum age for Rescue Diver?

12 years old, with divers aged 12 to 14 earning a Junior Rescue Diver certification.

Does Rescue Diver lead toward Divemaster?

Yes, it is a required prerequisite for PADI Divemaster, Sober Diving's first professional-level programme.
